Athens, GA, United States (AHN) - Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Zach Mettenberger was kicked off the team by coach Mark Richt for violation of team rules it was reported Sunday.
Mettenberger’s dismissal was related to his arrest outside a Remerton, GA. bar on March 7, where he was charged for underage drinking, obstruction, disorderly conduct and two counts of having false identification during spring break, according to several media outlets.
Georgia associate athletic director Claude Felton told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that it was “not a new incident involving Zach.”
Originally Felton said Mettenberger, 18, would be suspended for Georgia’s Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette, but Richt still left it open for further punishment.
Mettenberger was in a three-way competition for the Bulldogs’ starting job. He was the second player kicked off the Georgia team this spring.
Richt dismissed backup outside linebacker Montez Robinson this month after he was arrested on a simple battery charge, his third arrest in five months.
Both Richt and Mettenberger declined to comment.
